Looking for a reasonably priced vintage dreadnaught that plays great, and sounds great as well? We got you covered right here with this very nice worn in vintage Gibson J-50 deluxe. Made somewhere between 1973 and 1975 as Gibson's serial number system they were using back then is a bit ambiguous and that is as close as we can comfortably confirm for when this guitar was made. The binding on this guitar is starting to flake and chip off (like many J-50's from the 70's, it is however currently stable and doesn't need any repair work... unless for cosmetic reasons. The bridge appears to have been sanded down long ago in the past to lower the string height/ action on this guitar.... let's call this a "budget neck reset" if you will, as it achieves the same result of lowering the string height, and dialing in the action without the hefty price tag of paying a luthier for a few hours of skilled labor. There's usually a tapered upward bulge in the center of the bridge, but on this guitar it was sanded down to dial in the action. She plays great, and we mention this only for the sake of an honest description.
The guitar is wonderfully worn in and is a very nice players grade instrument that has been played and gigged with for many years, she's used but not abused. So there are a good amount of pick scratches, little dings, and scuff marks which we love to see! It's a great playing guitar, so get out there and play it, take it out of the case and jam out around the camp fire, or put it in the back of your car and go gigging at the local watering holes!! Guitars are meant to be played and enjoyed, not to sit in a glass display case and touched only with white gloves on by the museum curator :) We don't detect any major repairs have been performed on this guitar in the past, nor is there any major work that needs to be done, she's ready to go to a new home and make beautiful music like it has for so many years before. The J-50 has a jumbo body with a solid spruce top and mahogany back, sides, and neck. A 14/20-fret rosewood finger board with pearl dot inlay, a large tortoise pick guard, and tortoise body binding. And of course they all have the huge sound for which vintage Jumbo Gibsons have been famous for decades. Nut width is 1-11/16" inches and neck shape feels like a nice "modified C"ā¦. it's a slim C that fits great (basically perfect) in the hands, and the back of the neck also has a satin like feel to the finish allowing you quickly play up and down the neck with ease. The lower bout strap button should be Nickle plated but on this guitar it has been replaced with a black plastic version (see photos).
